A Pictorial History of the Hawker Hunter and the Thumrait Thuggies In Oman

ByDavid J. Griffin

A brief illustrated history of the Hawker Hunter in the service of the Sultanate of Oman between 1975 and 1993 and with the crews who operated and maintained the aircraft, the 'Thumrait Thuggies'. It details the work lives and social life of the westerners that served at Thumrait to take an Air Force from simple beginning to one that is now internationally respected and recognised. The Hawker Hunter entered service with SOAF as it then was in 1975 and it arrived at a good time. It would continue in service alongside the Sepecat Jaguar at Thumrait until 1993 when it was finally retired and replaced with Hawk aircraft and the Jaguars replaced with the F-16. The contribution to SOAF/RAFO over the years by Airworks, Marconi, Electroman, Plessey and the other contracters has been invaluable. Hopefully, this compilation of information and photos will help some to remember, and others to understand the life we led.
