The topic of inquiry for my graduate thesis is “Can the built environment enhance collaborative learning in the higher-education classroom?” My research has shown that this is indeed quite achievable. In lieu of this, my project seeks to realize a solution for a new science community on Ball State University’s campus. To form my design criteria for this community, I have used an evidence-based design approach. Over the past two years, I have interviewed science-focused educators in higher education at Ball State University and Purdue University, received and evaluated more than 600 questionnaires from students taking science courses at the collegiate level, personally observed numerous science courses while in session, and have built up a literature review of other precedents that support my findings.
