Molly White, daughter of London dockworker Sam and Eileen, gets a nice present for her sixth birthday, The Second World war. Molly is sent to a farm owned by Joe and Mary Elkins. Joe suffered terribly in the First World War, and came home to Mary declaring that he did not want to bring children into a world where such things could happen. Molly’s father was always telling her stories of fearsome horned monsters and handsome princes in faraway lands. Molly is terrified to find that one such monster, a beast the like of which she had never seen before, is living on the very farm she is staying at; it is Joe’s old cow. At first she is wary of the monster, but soon befriends her, sharing all of her hopes and fears with her. She has called the cow Moo, as whatever question she asks the answer is always the same, Moo…..
