This book is written as a tribute to the Reverend James Ramsay who was vicar of a small Kentish Parish at the end of the eighteenth century.Drawing on his experience as a ship’s surgeon in the Royal Navy and as a minister on St Kitts in the Caribbean, he made a critical early contribution to the movement to abolish the slave trade. The text makes extensive use of contemporary quotations which include terms now regarded as offensive.
