A little more than six centuries after the destruction of the Nephite Federation, the prophecy of the Gentiles finding the continent of New Canaan is fulfilled through the appearance of a Norse ship off New Canaan's northeastern coast in 985 AD. Among the crewmen of the vessel is Olaf Hansson, who wants to set foot on the unknown land. However, his skipper says no to exploring it. So for the next 15 years, Olaf is haunted by the memory of the golden opportunity which was denied him. When he receives an invitation from explorer Leif Ericsson to go on an expedition to New Canaan, Olaf says. Accepting the offer eventually brings Olaf a dear personal price which leaves him uneasy about further visitations to the continent. Furthermore, his uneasiness creates a conflict between him and his eldest son who wants to see New Canaan for himself
