Rupert Chawner Brooke (1887-1915) was born in Rugby, in the UK. He was the third of four children.
He studied at Rugby School and then In 1906, Rupert began studying Classics at King’s College, Cambridge.
At the outbreak of World War One, in 1914, Brooke enlisted, and soon became noticed for his war poetry. In 1915, two of his sonnets; IV: The Dead & V: The Soldier, were published in The Times Literary Supplement, one of which, (V: The Soldier), was read out on Easter Sunday that year at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
In 1915, while stationed in Egypt, he developed gastroenteritis. Aggravated further by a mosquito bite, the bite wound became septic, and he died, on 23rd April 2015, on the French hospital ship, the Duguay-Trouin while it was moored off the Greek island of Skyros.
He was buried in an olive grove in Skyros, and his grave remains there today with a monument.
In 1985, Brooke was one of the sixteen First World War poets who were commemorated with a monument at Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.
