Teaching students the theory and practice of industrial and pharmaceutical science without access to actual industrial manufacturing facilities produces graduates who may not be quickly integrated into real pharmaceutical industrial settings. The Igbinedion University Alcohol Based Disinfectant Factory is designed as a Teaching-industry to integrate teaching and research with actual industrial manufacturing. The aim of this model Teaching-industry is to understand and practise industrial manufacturing, identify and research for solutions to problems in industrial practices, and adapt students to real industrial practices. This approach is in agreement with studies on best practices for better industrialization. The teaching-industry produces alcohol based disinfectants; methylated spirit, surgical spirit, and hand sanitizer using current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) and designated standard operational procedures (S.O.Ps). Students are trained on and involved in cGMP documentation and operational compliance to regulatory standards. The students are trained to understand and follow S.O.Ps concerning factory layout, environmental control measures, staffing, safety and precautionary measures, First-Aid, water sourcing and water treatment, raw- materials sourcing, stocking and documentation, machine installation and operations, production, packaging, storage, finished products analysis, sales, documentation, cleaning and maintenance procedures, quality assurance and control, and certification, and validation methods in manufacturing operations. Installing and operating teaching-industry within academic facility creates enabling environment for integrating expertise, ideas and skills, improving pedagogical and communication skill of teachers and teacher-practitioners, and inter-disciplinary collaborations between researchers, teaching professionals, teaching-practitioners, and students towards improved production and professional practice. This manual guides the factory worker, student and teacher-practitioner through expected manufacturing practices in the teaching-industry. The disinfectants produced are supplied for use to the University Teaching Hospital, other University facilities, immediate communities and health facilities.
