Classified as a memoir, the book is a collection of 22 related narrative essays based on a theme: recollections of a girl growing up in a small town in Illinois as it was back in the time of the Great Depression and World War II. Through various subthemes and sometimes a wry humor, the essays show the way it was for kids, in particular girls, growing up back then and for their families making do with shortages of money and goods.
