
Although I was really poor as a child when my parents lost a succession of three farms during the Depression and Drought, I don’t remember feeling poor; perhaps it was because many cousins and schoolmates were also poor. My parents, being farmers, were usually hopeful—“next year it will surely rain”—and, after seven years, the rains finally came.
