During the five years preceding the United States’ entry into World War II, a transitional observation/scouting biplane was carried by most USN warships, from battleships to cruisers, called the Curtiss SOC (or by the US Government-owned Naval Aircraft Factory (NAF) located in Philadelphia, PA.) Seagull. The Seagull was just being replaced by more modern models such as the Vought OS2U Kingfisher. Between limited squadrons per ship (2-3) and a few aircraft carriers (for the land-based hook version), only 322 were made, the bulk by Curtiss and the remainder by NAF. Listed by Bureau Number (BuNo), here is the history of all SOC/SON Seagulls.
