Doyle Williams became curious about his father's past when as a young teenager in the 1950s he heard an older cousin pleading with his dad for cooperation in documenting his dad's life story. The author's father declined the offer, leading the author and his siblings to begin a search to determine what was so interesting to this older cousin. The author, at age 22, initiated a series of recorded interviews with his elderly aunts and uncles, traveling across the country to record their oral histories. Later, he and his sister began a genealogical search of the family. Now at age 65, he has compiled what he has learned into this book, which traces the lines of his father's side of the family tree from England to New England, and eventually to Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma, documenting many of their struggles and adventures. The result is a fascinating saga of an American family.
