HISTORY OF CHIKKODI TALUKA IN POST INDEPENDENCE PERIOD

INTRODUCTION Chikkodi taluka is the highest populated one among the ten talukas of Belgaum district. It is situated in the North Western part of Karnataka state. This research endeavours to study the Changing face of Chikkodi taluka in terms of socio, economic, political developments in post-independence era. This background chapter highlights geographical, geological, facts of this region and traces the history till the attainment of independence. Geographical and Geological Features: Chikkodi taluka lies between 16.32 to 16.40 North latitude and 74.22 to 74.49 East longitude. The area of the taluka is 12695 square kms. It comprises 104 villages and 3 townships namely Chikodi, Nipani and Sadalaga.The Chikkodi taluka is surrounded by Maharashtra State in the North and West, Athani, Raibag and Gokak talukas of Karnataka in the East and Hukkeri taluka of Karnataka in the South.1
