Memoirs of Raising in the 5 G’s To Rising as a Graduate and a Guiser The Travails of a Jamaican Immigrant Book 5: The Great Portmore Era
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
I am inviting readers into my personal space and share some of the “personal…traumas” I endured from a tender age, the relentless parental mobility, the “migrant loss,” and the reliving of “lingering wounds,” as I searched for “restorative possibilities” as well as the triumphs and successes I experienced later in life. Hopefully, by “collecting, telling, retelling [my] stories”, I will find the healing and redemption that I seek.
In the beginning (1977), we are elated to move into our new, but humble two-bedroom house. The addition of the new baby who was sick and had to be ferried the neonatal clinic every night brought on its own challenges with us living outside of Kingston where the hospitals were and no car to get there.
I hurried into a lemon car, and with the mortgage, a car note, water woes, break-ins, and political violence (in 1980), it felt like a bad move. Life did not improve, and our living standards decreased daily. Luckily, a knight in shining armor came to my rescue, offered me a hand in marriage, and I jetted off to cold, cold England. See you for the next stage of my melodramatic life.
The stories revolved around keeping up with the Jones,... literally, paying for my driveway with roast fish, getting reacquainted with my Dad's plans for me, knowing how to make 2 L's (not 2 7's) clash, getting caught up in a love triangle and suitor's remorse, scoring a Jackie Ride, living with bus terminal in your front yard, and sleeping with cat's urine...literally. Also, jumping off a roof to my death - almost, being scolded in ATL for visiting the MLK memorial, holding a conversation with my delusional cousin, enjoying life with my proud military family, and taking a vacation to watch West Indies Cricket at Lords in London and finding love that led to marriage and migration, although the individual was out of the country at the time.
Prior to this, there was an exciting trip from Negril to Morant Point to attend a Dennis Brown concert that turned horrendous in the end, but provided some valuable lessons in love - the part about in sickness or in health. There was also the time when I almost caused us to lose our house aka garden flat, and go to prison because I desired to be a squatter, and many more stories, hence the need for including a Wisdom Poem. I hope that you will enjoy reading not only this book, but the entire seven-book series. I was sure to provide a background in each so that no reader, or child for that matter, is left behind.
