The Bay of Pigs turns out to be a fiasco—the fraudulent decoy map was completely unnecessary. Kennedy changes the landing point for the invasion only 24 hours before the attack, and a key component to its success is internal support from the counterrevolutionaries in the mountains. With such short notice, they are unable to reposition themselves; added to that Kennedy’s reluctance to commit US forces to the invasion, and it is a dismal failure. During a party, Julio Antonio meets his ex-girlfriend, Sandra once more, who takes him to a secluded area to explain to him in greater detail the reasons for their breakup. A commotion breaks out as Che discovers his bodyguard assassinated in a most grisly fashion. Julio Antonio refuses to account for his whereabouts due to his desire to shield Sandra from any shame, and when Che and Piñeiro confront him about it, he has had enough of Che’s repeated acceptance of Piñeiro’s suspicions and gossip and explodes in fury on Che. Sandra comes forward to explain, and Julio Antonio refuses to accept Che’s repeated apologies, taking the opportunity to finally get out of the madman’s circle of intimates. From the condition of the body, he already knows who is responsible: Che’s illegitimate daughter, Maggie, who had left him as a present a painting she had made which was an exact depiction of a nightmare fueled by delirium Julio Antonio had while recovering from the infected wounds he sustained while smuggling Che’s briefcase out of the military headquarters. He leaves the party and takes it to a friend with psychic abilities to see if there’s a connection or explanation. He has a meeting with yet another double of Lee Harvey Oswald, this time an agent for the West, and tells him everything he knows about the planned assassination of Kennedy. He and his current girlfriend, Chandee, escalate the clandestine war against the communists.
