The number of annual road traffic deaths has reached 1.35 million in the Global Community. Road traffic injuries are now the leading killer of people aged 5-29 years.
The burden is disproportionately borne by pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists; in particular those living in developing countries. Every day over 3,600 People are killed globally in crashes involving cars, buses, motorcycles, bicycles and trucks.
More than half of those killed are pedestrians, motorcyclists, or cyclists. 50 million more People suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.
Road traffic deaths and injuries cause considerable economic losses to families.
These losses arise from the cost of treatment as well as lost productivity for those killed or disabled by their injuries, and for family members who need to take time off work or school to care for the injured.
The crash death rate is over three times higher in developing nations than in high-income countries.
The problem is that People are expected to drive and own a car, being a prerequisite for many jobs; as well as giving a person status and prestige in society – propagated by car companies like Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, General Motors, Stellantis, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Dongfeng, FAW, Chang’an and Tesla - which are shielded by politicians and heads of government.
People get rewarded by society for having a car, but have to take many drawbacks into account, if they do not have a car.
The main reason why the religion of car driving emerged in society, is because of humanity’s fixation of unrestrained mobility; leading to a constant rush and obsession with speed.
Hence the number of cars constantly increase in our world. Consequently the number of car accidents also increase; millions of them fatal.
Also, environmental pollution caused by over 1.4 billion cars in the world increases by the day.
Because of the car industry People are falling victim to the rat race - an endless, self-defeating pursuit which increasingly kills People.
Action is needed to convince politicians and heads of government to curb the influence of the car industry and save lives; in particular financial, educational and ecological incentives - such as a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) and the creation of sustainable social-economic Ecovillages - so that People can circumvent cars, traffic injuries and the rat race; and still be able to provide for themselves and their families in Africa.
