Poems was published by Sir Samuel Ferguson in 1880. Some of these poems were previously published in periodicals such as Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, and Dublin University Magazine. Many can be considered a continuation of Ferguson’s Lays of the Western Gael published in 1864. After his marriage and his disillusion with the Young Ireland movement, Ferguson wrote little poetry, concentrating on his researches on Ireland’s archaeology and on Ogham stone relics. Included in this volume are two of Ferguson's critically acclaimed works, "Deirdre" and "Conary". An Index of First Lines is provided. The volume also includes an illustrated Appendix augmenting his poem "The Sinking of the Monitor" with archival material from the U.S. Navy.
This volume is one of a series, The Poetry of Ireland. The intent of this series is to make available to the general reader as well as the student and researcher entire works of the poets of Ireland, long out of print, and difficult to find.
