In the study of political philosophy the concern is with the political society, its nature and its end, which is the highest human common good. It deals with humans insofar as they are members if the society. It also deals with political life especially with the essence, origin and value of the slate. On the basis of the above therefore, the concern of this essay is to define the state its nature, features and functions. Emphasis is made on the examination of the Nigerian State, The nm being to show whether or not Nigeria, could he said to be a coercive state At this juncture a brief historical survey of Nigerian slate will not be out of place. Nigeria is 43 years since independence The Nigeria state is we have it today is an outcome of colonialism. It was formed nit of numerous independent city states such as the Hausa-fulani. The Yoruba and the Igbos, the Efiks, etc. For 30 years or thereabout the military has wielded the political power of the country. It is on the basis of this that we shall be looking at some of the military regimes that have ruled this country in the past, in order to ascertain how far this idea of freedom was being objectified m the country at those times. As earlier stated colonialism bequeathed on Nigeria a state system based on military.
