La Santisima Muerte: A Mexican Folk Saint

ByEdward Holman

The Santisima Muerte, a Mexican Folk Saint, is growing in popularity not only in Mexico, but in the United States and around the world. So much conflicting and paradigm-driven misinformation about her has been published in articles and writings of all sorts, that it is worth the effort to examine this phenomena from an objective and sober viewpoint. Author Edward Bryant Holman has studied Mexican curanderismo from the viewpoint of a folklorist since 1991, having interviewed hundreds of subjects and reading various books on the topic and on related, supporting subjects - historical, anthropological, and cultural material in English and Spanish - and has published a huge trove of articles on the Internet in the interim. He lives on the Mexican border, basing most of his research out of Ojinaga, Chihuahua.
