After Lincoln's assassination in 1865, Edward P. Doherty led the cavalry detachment that hunter down John Wilkes Booth. Doherty, however, has served since the earliest days of the war. Previously a resident of (and born in?) Canada, he had moved to New York city shortly before the outbreak of war. He joined the 71st New York Militia. During these early days he wrote several letters that were published in a Canadian newspaper. This file consists of those five letters, and is, I believe, the first time they have been reprinted since 1861.
