This book will discuss the future of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city. It is predicted that a major earthquake will strike the region within the next 30 years, causing widespread disruption and loss of life.
Seismologists and engineers working on this topic understand the damage that may be caused, and what could be done to help prevent it, but no one has asked what becomes of the city afterwards.
To help answer this question, two of the strongest earthquakes in European history have been chosen as case studies. Lisbon was redesigned following the 1755 earthquake, and Messina was rebuilt in the aftermath of the 1905 earthquake.
Using the information presented on these examples, together with field research in Istanbul, proposals for the redesign and rebuild strategies will be investigated and presented for discussion.
