
Does the Media Present a Disempowered Image of Women in Contemporary Sport Culture?
Since historical times, competitive sport has been an important ingredient in the systematic construction and promotion the ideals of masculinity in society. However, times have changed and women now enjoy a position of far greater equality than they ever did before. An increasingly larger number of girls and women now participate in sports once considered the exclusive domain of males, but criticism about their depiction in media created image of sport culture continue. It appears that post – feminism is not about the absence of feminism despite the wishes of some women to achieve absolute equality regardless of natural differences. This essay presents an examination of the image of women in contemporary sport culture and tries to discover if they have been ascribed a disempowered image.
