Although counselling has been provided as a support service in many educational programmes, including those for adult education, its significance within the context of the overall effort to educate learners has remained poorly understood. Teaching in the classroom, curriculum and student performance in examinations is often thought of as being a hint of how effective an educational programme is. However, support services are essential and help with developing students in a manner that aids them in functioning in a practical way. This thesis examines why counselling services are needed in adult education.
