Manchester United, an elite English football club, has emerged as a global brand after having won the FA Premier League/Football League 15 times, FA Cup 11 times, the League Cup twice, the European Cup twice, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once, the Intercontinental Cup once and the European Super Cup once. The club made history when it won the UEFA Champions League, the FA Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season in 1999. Manchester United is also known as the Red Devils and started off as the Newton Heath F. C. This dissertation examines the reasons behind the popularity of Manchester United by presenting a review of the published literature related to the football industry and Manchester United. Marketing theory is discussed and a survey that presents opinions about the popularity of Manchester United is included in the dissertation.
