A Brief History of the City of Prairie View, Texas

This history of Prairie View, Texas is a partial record of the fascinating stream of human activity on the land and in part chronicles the evolution of the cultural environment that arises from this activity. It is intended to serve as a snapshot of the total Prairie View community, which includes Prairie View A&M University, as it moves in transition from a pristine wilderness frontier to an incorporated municipality and home to Texas’s oldest Historically African American (state supported) institution of higher education. This then in part is the Community’s & the University’s Story, as they both find themselves continuously engaged at the point of change, on the frontiers of knowledge, learning, service, development, liberty, freedom and self-determination
