Liz Barnes, the driven, dark-hearted heroine of A BRAND NEW HELL, is a successful real estate developer who lives near Annapolis in the “prestigious Linden Harbor enclave.” While Liz schemes to acquire Eastern Neck Island – a National Wildlife Refuge – and turn it into an exclusive community for the Super-Rich, oystermen over on Maryland’s Eastern Shore are getting ready for the first day of tonging season. Rock Hall natives like Deadeye, Crowbar, Seasnake and his son, Junior, fire up their workboats and head down the Chesapeake, as the modern ways of the Western Shore head east across the Bay and threaten to ruin their way of life.
