The Idiot

What happens when perfect goodness enters a corrupt world? Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot follows Prince Myshkin, a genuinely compassionate, honest man recently returned to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss sanatorium treating his epilepsy. Everyone calls him an "idiot" because he takes people at their word, forgives instantly, and believes in human goodness—fatal flaws in a society built on manipulation and self-interest. He falls into a love triangle with two women: Nastasya Filippovna, a damaged beauty using her rage and sexuality as weapons against the men who ruined her, and Aglaya, a passionate young woman torn between loving Myshkin and despising his weakness. Myshkin tries to save everyone through compassion alone, but his Christ-like goodness can't survive contact with reality. Fortunes are gambled, reputations destroyed, and a murder changes everything. By the end, Myshkin's attempt to love everyone leaves him loving no one effectively, and his radical goodness doesn't redeem society; it destroys him. Dostoevsky's devastating question: Can a truly good person exist in this world, or does goodness itself become complicity?
