Around the year 1450 B.C., the Rebu people are attacked by the Egyptians. They fight desperately, but cannot withstand the greater strength of the Egyptian chariots and siege tactics. Amuba, a Rebu prince, witnesses his father fall in battle, and his people overthrown. He is made a slave, and given as a personal servant to Chebron, the son of an Egyptian priest. Chebron treats Amuba more as a companion than a servant, and the two young men become friends. When Chebron accidentally kills Faucis, a sacred cat, Amuba and Chebron must hide to escape the wrath of the Egyptian people. There are further adventures, including a providential meeting with an Egyptian prince named Moses.
