It begins with Gary’s birth in 1939, shortly before the beginning of World War II, and ends with his graduation from Luck High School and preparation for college in 1957. This book is a stirring description of the fun and difficulties of growing up during a time without electricity and running water. Amazing details are provided about farm life including food, fun, and jobs using many humorous anecdotes. It is easy to become immersed within the one-room school environment and all the antics of Gary’s high school years. What an adventure following the people and personalities that surrounded Gary during his developmental years on the farm. Growing up a little out of Luck certainly created an enchanting environment that is wonderfully described in this fun and enlightening book.
