The Valley of the Queens Project was a collaboration of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Getty Conservation Institute from 2006-2011, which resulted in the development of a comprehensive plan for conserving and managing the Valley. Volume 1 of the Assessment Report records research and assessments undertaken for the main components of the project. This includes an overview of the significance and historical context from the 18th Dynasty through the Coptic period; an assessment of the management context, outlining operational issues and financial sustainability considerations; visitor management, including statistics, surveys and observations, the history of visitation, and the potential for additional site elements to be opened; site-wide threats such as flooding and bat colonies; and an historical overview and condition assessment of fourteen site elements in the Valley.
