What do we think a co-op is and who is this book for ? This book is for anyone who is involved in a community led organisation that is democratically organised and works for the benefit of that community, not for the profit of individuals. It is an introduction for anyone elected to a role and would like to know a little more about what they have taken on. Throughout this book we will refer to Co-ops. There are many types of organisation which operate in this way, whether wholly owned co-operatives, community housing associations, tenant management organisations, estate management boards, community land trusts, short-life co-ops or some mixture of any of those. Some purists will also distinguish between the types of rules that each have, but to be honest, none of this is of great interest to most of us. ‘Co-ops’ is an ordinary word that belongs to extraordinary people and in this book will cover the organisation that belongs to you. This book is the same content as the A4 book, but is in a handbook format.
