The fourth publication from the Social Practice Workshop at California College of the Arts, After Words: Texts on Voice came about as an examination not only of what it means to speak, but also what it means to speak with, on behalf of, or about others. Collectively, these writings examine the logic of a generative grammar, a linear sequence in which words precede our speaking of them, as an inherently unstable means of representing, translating or conveying experience. Divided into four sections: Inside Voices, Area Codes, Outside Voices, and Dialects, After Words attempts to analyze, undo, and yet also reposition the power of the speech act. Comprised primarily of essays from the 2010 Social Practice Workshop group, the text also includes writings on voice from guest artists and thinkers Raimundas Malasauskas, Althea Thauberger, A Constructed World, Gregory Sholette, Randy Lee Cutler, and Carolina Cayacedo
