A new era has dawned, and we are reminded daily of the ramifications of our new reality. Globalization has led to the expansion of corporate interest and economic speculation to every corner of the globe, quickly followed by technology, goods and services, and cultural diffusion. Through this expansion and colonization of the earth, we are increasingly aware of the physical, psychological and temporal limits to this world. Production, business, and finance are global processes, and cities must adapt to this new reality in order to stay competitive and relevant. Contemporary city design and planning must do more than serve capitalism’s demands by moving our political economy into a more sustainable and socially responsible system. However, a new ideal city, characterized by fluidity and equality, committed to individuality and the common good has not yet emerged. Lost is our vision for the city. To this end, I propose a new utopia: the teleportation city.
