Comic master Jack Cole was asked to create a character that could compete with Will Eisner's The Spirit. Cole was not thrilled being asked to copy another man's work (and Eisner wasn't terribly pleased either), but in the 1940s comic world, writers and illustrators did what they were told. This was one of the few times when the copy became popular and famous in its own right – as MIDNIGHT thrilled readers for 68 issues – and was the cover character for 54 of them! In this volume Paul Gustavson continued the writing/artistry through issue #67 before Jack Cole returned to see the series through to its glorious (but unfortunate) end!
