Helen Bedford tells the story of her life from her birth in 1929 until her marriage in 1954, reflecting the social changes during that time.
She was born in the slums during the Depression, the third of a family of four children.
Then came the war, and the children were evacuated to the country, an experience that changed Helen’s life. She stayed with five different families during that time: on two different farms, in a detached house in a village, a vicarage and finally a manor house with a titled lady.
Helen shows you this world first through the eyes of a child, then those of a growing girl and finally those of a woman. She tells her story directly, giving the reader an insight into a world which no longer exists.
