"Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West"
BY HENRY B. SMITH.
We have heard, with great ‘authority’ that the United States was founded, at best, by Deists…and definitely not by any ‘theological’ or ‘evangelical’ people. That Deist thought, which is practical Atheism, was the ruling philosophy of the Founders is just not substantiated by the historical record.
This Address by Presbyterian Minister, and Union Seminary Professor Henry Boynton Smith, reveals how the collegiate system which was first initiated with Harvard, extended to the developing West.
Quote: "It is no wonder that all of our earlier colleges, and, following in their train, most of the later, have been animated by the conviction, that institutions of learning are needed by Christianity...Yale College...the Assembly’s Catechism in Greek was read by the Freshmen; the Sophomores studied Hebrew; the Juniors, Syriac and the Seniors both at Harvard and Yale were thoroughly instructed in divinity"
