James Hatton and Karl Sheppard, two college roomies drive up to a mixer to find women. Physically, they’re opposites. James is Bobby Kennedy to Karl’s Jerry Garcia. While having a Coke, James spies a young ballet dancer running back from class. He catches her eye, then intercepts her. He is smitten by this exotic doe-eyed girl. She’s Russian and already dating a pre-med student. James implores her to at least dance with him. Ultimately, she does though Louisa informs him it’s hopeless. She’s already engaged. A week later the draft lottery is announced. All over the country the phones are tied-up as half of America’s young men realize their lives have changed. America is in an unofficial civil war, only it isn’t the North against the South, it’s war within the family. James enlists in the Air Force and becomes a pilot. But the tension of the war exists inside the military as well.
