This book is about the connections between marine environments and human behavior. The scientific study of the brain, mind, and behavior is known as Psychology. Categories of marine environments may be considered in a number of ways. They may be classified in terms of depth within the ocean. Often marine biologists use the term ecosystem to think about the different types of marine environments. For example, there are salt marshes, beaches, estuaries, the ocean floor, the broad ocean, the inter-tidal zones, coral reefs, lagoons, and mangroves. There are concepts within the field of psychology that are relevant to marine settings. We may inquire, for example, about the ways marine environments may interact with human behavior. The field of Psychology may be able to help us to preserve and protect the oceans and coastal areas. In this book we will investigate the pertinence of ideas and perspectives drawn from the field of psychology to understanding phenomena in marine environments. The book will examine advantages of marine settings to human well-being and prosperity. We will discuss how techniques and methods developed in the field of psychology may be valuable in dealing with issues occurring in ocean and coastal settings. We will explore variables that may have potency in terms of propelling individuals to conserve and protect marine conditions. The book will examine the connections among individuals and marine environments. We will investigate several hypotheses, strategies, and innovations that can be useful in protecting and preserving our seas and coastal environments. We will also explore some of the ways humans interact with, and even use marine environments for their own purposes. For example, we will consider ocean activities such as sailing and surfing. How does the human brain and nervous system interact with the ocean? The average salinity of the world’s oceans is about 3.5%. In the human body, it is about .9 %. Although the salt content of our body is not precisely the same as ocean water, we do have, in many ways, a fascinating and complex interrelationship with the marine environment. We will describe various types of marine environments and discuss impacts of some of those environments on human health and functioning. Categories of marine environments may be considered in a number of ways. They may be categorized in terms of depth within the ocean.
