The noted American novelist and poet's largely-forgotten 1929 narrative poem 'Sarah Simon' is arguably the finest work of literature ever to be set in Bermuda. In it, Allen recounts the life of a black Bermudian woman of the late-19th and early-20th Centuries whom he came to know and admire during his lengthy sojourn on the island, during which he more famously wrote his classic historical novel 'Anthony Adverse'. Allen's long and lovely poem is enhanced in this new scholarly edition by annotations and an introductory essay by the Bermudian writer and historian Jonathan Land Evans.
