DEATH IMMINENT (from the introduction)
"I was serving as a Navy flyer in the South Pacific region during World War II when I was very seriously wounded by the premature explosion of a defective hand grenade that I was throwing. It traumatically-amputated my right hand and forearm and severely-punctured both my lungs.... A short time later, when I was alone in my hospital room, I noted the medical chart at the foot of my bed, and wanted to see what the chart said. I disconnected the oxygen tube and call-button and crawled down to the foot of the bed to look at the chart—the chart only said two words: 'DEATH IMMINENT.' 'What?' I thought, 'No Way!' I slowly and painfully crawled back up into my bed, reconnected my oxygen supply and murmured to myself, 'I’ll show them!' I then fell back to sleep in utter exhaustion."
