As an avid cricket fan of the past and not-too-great cricket scorer, I followed the game many years back in the 1970s and 1980s. As a child, my father took me to see the great West Indies cricket team play at Sabina Park in Kingston in the late 1950s (against Pakistan) or early 1960s (against England) when I was around five or seven years old. I remember these dates because I Iived with my paternal grandmother during those years, and I recall how annoyed she was with my dad for taking me to sit in the grass all day long and scorching my tender skin, causing me to bathe in good, old Anchor butter for days. Later, when I went to live with my mother, my older brother Edgar and I played pick-up cricket on Tower Hill/Waltham Gardens streets using coconut brows for bats and coconut oil pans or stones for wickets. It was fun all the way! This book honors an unsung cricket hero, Edgar Hibbert, a star player for his team, Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Company Cricket Club (the light and power arm in Jamaica), where I also worked after leaving school. Little did I know that my older brother would be a key man on their Senior Cup and Junior Cup cricket teams. He even went to trials for the Jamaica team. JPS won the Junior Cup final four (4) times, and Edgar played in all four matches – 1972, 1973, 1976 (date disputed), and 1980.
