The cricketer I am paying homage to in this book is none other than my friend, Dorrett “Gay” Davis, now Graham. She played cricket for Canada Dry women’s team, the Jamaica women’s team, and the West Indies women’s team (see Volume 3). She introduced me to the men's team at St. Catherine and taught me how to make sandwiches and drinks for the team on a budget every week. Note that I am not honoring Gay for her stellar cricket career though she is listed among the notable players from the 1973 teams. It was not because she does not have the best statistics in women’s cricket, but I am honoring all the women from the 1973-6 teams for their bravery to enter, or should I say break the glass ceiling into a man’s world at the professional and international levels. Many, including Gay, have remained unsung despite their pioneering contribution to women’s cricket. The notion that women would be playing cricket and traveling the world over representing their country, teams, and indeed themselves, too, as many now play county cricket for teams around the world. In summary, in my eyes, this is the “greatness” in their achievements, and not necessarily their statistical output in terms of the number of runs made, wickets taken, balls caught, or players stumped.
