Since 2008, images of Athens in flames have been stamped across Western media and have had a resounding impact. Public reaction to the victims of harsh austerity measures has been one of pity, but has still assumed that they must be there for a reason. We, mere witnesses, look on as they seem to be trying desperately to stay afloat a sinking ship. Looking into the clichés assigned to a country we know so little about, it is true to say that they are deep-rooted. We coin the Greek as lazy and fraudulent, as people who profit at the expense of others. At the time when a black page is being written in their History, it seemed all the more necessary that we allowed the people of Athens to speak out. It is in the capital city more than any other place that we see the toll these events are taking on everybody’s lives.
