Ireland was always on the mind and undoubtedly in the heart of Victorian England's most controversial historian, James Anthony Froude. His affection for the country began in the 1840s and lasted throughout his life. Muckross, composed in 1848, belongs to Froude's earliest writings on Ireland and is reproduced in this context for the first time.
