Baronet James Matthew Barrie, or J. M. Barrie, was a prominent Scottish playwright and novelist, widely known for his masterpiece, Peter and Wendy, which was originally presented as a play and later translated into a children's fantasy novel, somewhat emulating the absurdist and creative style of Lewis Carroll (author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There). He was also a friend of prominent writers of his time, including: Arthur Conan Doyle, George Bernard Shaw, George Meredith, Robert Louis Stevenson and Thomas Hardy.
Finally, it should be noted that Peter Pan and Wendy is a two-faceted novel. On the one hand, it is intended to entertain children, and on the other, its background about human nature is profound and impactful, reflected in its main characters: a) the selfish, insensitive, and stingy Mr. Darling, b) the shy, helpful, and responsible Wendy, c) the bold, cunning, conceited, insolent, ignorant, presumptuous, and irresponsible Peter Pan, d) the evil, intelligent, envious, and vain Captain Hook; and e) the envious and narcissistic Tinker Bell. In addition, there are the distinct personalities of: a) Wendy's brothers; b) the lost boys; and c) the pirates. This is a sensational story that leads to reflect about the meaning of life and human destiny.
