Penny lives a perfectly normal and peaceful life in her home, Cynnepoli, located atop Mount Kivot. Penny has never known what the surface of the world looks like, and has never cared. But one night, she opens the door to a mysterious stranger. The stranger reveals himself as Hazel, a scavenger for an unknown place called The Academy. Hazel helps reveal to Penny that she is a Skycrafter with powers to control air. He leads her down an ancient lift that forces Cynnepoli's citizens to stay in their home and travels to the Mainlands, where the Academy lies. Upon their arrival, Penny and Hazel are greeted by Leet, the Headmaster. Penny is quickly identified as the Master of Air. Penny joins the other Masters for training and discovers a plot to destroy the Mainlands, which Leet is apart of. After Leet's betrayal, Penny and the other Masters escape with the knowledge that the capital cities of the Mainlands are under the control of Shadowcraft, which is threatening to destroy the world. Together, they journey across foreign lands to battle the threat of Shadowcraft. Along the way, the Masters will make enemies, meet new friends, learn new skills, and experience several different emotions.
