Canada played a critical role throughout the hostilities marking World War II. In fact, the Canadian war effort was decisive in ensuring the Allied victory.
Canada, given its small population of 11 500 000 inhabitants, has been the country of which the war effort in men and material was the most important among the Allied nations.
Altogether, the number of Canadians enlisted during the conflict reached 1 100 000 men, all volunteers - approximately 9.5% of the population.
