Living On the Edge

ByJagi Gakunju

Jagi Gakunju is a Kenyan businessman and conservationist. As a child during the Emergency, he was interned in a concentration camp with his family. After university, he joined ALICO, an insurance company, where he soon unearthed a sophisticated fraud. Having mastered the new computer technology, he went to train ALICO employees in the Caribbean. Sent to West Africa as the Regional Claims Manager, he was in charge of five countries. Back home, he joined Africa Air Rescue where his sales strategy saw the company’s turnover increase rapidly. In 2003, he became the CEO of AAR. Jagi loves nature and has climbed Mt. Kenya 14 times. As the founding Chairman of the Uvumbuzi Club, he led members overland to the Okavango Delta in Botswana in 1989. A keen ornithologist, Jagi turned the land he inherited into the Wajee Nature Park. About 120 species of birds have been seen there and the Park is officially an Important Bird Area (IBA). Now retired, Jagi devotes his time to the Park and to conservation.
