Cheyne Stokes has a night of frightening dreams. After she awakes she discovers to her dismay that she has died. Cheyne worked as a coffin saleswoman for a big funeral parlour corporation, as a worker she is disenfranchised by the chiefly male workers and senior staff. The male workers are work shy shirkers who do the bare minimum for maximum wages, whereas Cheyne works to the maximum for the minimum wage. Cheyne earns to support her family, earnings that stop as soon as it is discovered she is dead: even though a dead person selling coffins would be good for the company image. Cheyne writes articles for the woman’s press to bring in extra money, and champions the cause of the lowly. To herself, Cheyne makes sense whilst speaking but, to others, she is a puzzle that terrifies them, for no apparent reason. For the sake of appearances her father murders her. But that is only the beginning of the story for there is a final twist in the tale….
