On Some Words Derived from Languages of N. American Indians

James Hammond Trumbull was a famous 19th century American scholar and philologist who studied North American native languages. This paper, originally published in 1872, discusses several words in English that were borrowed from American aboriginal languages of that era. Trumbull demonstrates an amazing breadth of scholarship, citing examples from a number of aboriginal languages - some of which are already extinct. Although written over a hundred years ago, this article still makes an interesting read and is a first step for appreciating and valuing our endangered and dying native languages - before it's too late!
