"Is there a soul without a wound?" my sister, a poet, once asked me. I answered, "There are wounds in the soul. They occur when our mind, will, or emotions are startled so that a wound in our soul is produced, leaving a scar that we must heal." I've experienced several soul scars in my life, each of which has brought me to the point of hopelessness. It is not an exaggeration to state that life is a perpetual cycle of suffering, hurting, and recovering in one's interpersonal connections. At some point in their lives, everyone has scars. A loved one's death, a breakup, family problems, a misbehaving child, common obstacles, addictions, accidents, a stab in the back, etc., are all potential to appear out of nowhere and knock us off our feet.
